New Paltz
Founded 1677. College town (SUNY). Closest Catskills town to NYC. Not much open before 11am. See also Kingston and High Falls.
The town's busy main street serves both students and shoppers, with a wide range of boutiques, books and bygones. At the foot of the hill to the right in the photo lies the 17th C. Huguenot Street.

Walking tour
Choose your walk carefully, and New Paltz is enchanting. It contains the oldest intact street in America, an entire street of original stone houses.

Scenic drive
Sunday morning, when everything else is closed, enjoy the open road. We've plotted for you a winding path through country lanes. Take 44/55 over the Gunks (mind the hairpin). In winter, go via High Falls. An all-season pleaser.

More than great coffee
Fresh bread, baked goods, coffee voted best in the Valley--pick up your breakfast on the way in and relax with it upstairs.

Great coffee
Who let Starbucks in? Actually they were invited by a bookstore used to be next door. They fit in nicely in this college town. Now head across Main Street to Chapel Road for your books.

Medusa Gallery
Exotic antique and unique accent pieces
Not your usual antiques: ravishingly beautiful objects scattered sumptuously in this rich dark interior testify to a passionate eye for style. Also modern paintings and art objects. A treat. Email.

Huguenot Antique & Art Village
Village within a village
If it's an intense shopping experience you're after, the mother lode in New Paltz lies in this charming winding street at the far west of town, with three dozen storefronts and an excellent multi-dealer antique barn.

LUNCH

The Village Tearoom
European sophistication in the heart of New Paltz
Agnes comes to New Paltz from Scotland by way of the Culinary Institute. She's a  power baker, and wields a mean teapot. Great place for tea, and breakfast. And why not lunch? And dinner?

Neko Sushi
Fine Japanese cuisine
Excellent Japanese food, a worthy part of New Paltz's diversity in eating and dining..

AFTERNOON
Nearby country towns
New Paltz is part of a community of historic towns dating back to the 17th Century. Visit Kingston, the original capital of New York State, and take the picture quiz (sample at left).
